History
In 1919, Mr. Alex Wilson of Toronto, who had amassed considerable wealth through his father's cigar company, the manufacturers of the popular "Bachelor" brand, purchased the property and together with his wife, began to develop it into the estate showplace that it became.
Elaborate floral gardens were installed as well as a swimming pool, tea house, greenhouses, a reflecting pool and an exquisite dance hall above the boathouse. Scottish stonemasons, reportedly the same that built Casa Loma, were hired to construct huge pillars, the shape of cigars at the entrance.
An intricate system of paths and bordered walkways, all of stone, was constructed and statues placed with stunning results. In its time, Seven Mile Island was a popular spot for community picnics hosted by the Wilson's, a place of extraordinary tranquility and beauty.
